Enbridge Green Button guide: Download My Data and Share My Data

Enbridge Gas serves most of Ontario's natural gas customers, so for anyone building an energy report, a benchmarking submission or a greenhouse gas inventory, its data is the gas half of the picture. Enbridge calls its Green Button implementation Download and Share Your Data, and the two functions behind it, Download My Data and Share My Data, are the equivalents of the Download My Data and Connect My Data functions on the electricity side.

This guide explains exactly what Enbridge says it offers, in its own terms: the formats, the history length, how a third party gets authorized and how that authorization is ended. It then covers what the file contains, how gas granularity differs from electricity, how to convert cubic metres into energy and emissions using published government factors, and where PDF bills still fit. Everything about Enbridge comes from Enbridge's public pages, linked where used; this is a description of the customer-facing process, not of how Enbridge treats any particular vendor.

Where the feature lives

Enbridge's download and share your data page says that to download your energy data you sign in or register for My Account, go to the Share My Data section, and choose Download Your Data. The same page states that both residential and business customers can use it. There is no separate Green Button portal; everything sits inside My Account, and the same section is where third-party authorizations are managed.

If you cannot find it, the usual reason is that the account is not registered for My Account, or that the person logging in is not the account holder. Enbridge's page adds that customers without a My Account can still authorize a third party, but only one account at a time, using the account number, postal code and email address on file.

What Enbridge says Download My Data provides

According to Enbridge's page, Download My Data gives you up to 24 months of energy data as XML files, and you choose which of three categories to include: Account, Billing and Usage. The page describes the output as XML files, and the purpose it gives is better insight into energy waste and inefficiencies.

Enbridge's general FAQ separately notes that customers can view up to 24 months of historical bills on My Account, so the Green Button history matches what the account pages show. Anything older than 24 months is not available through this route, which matters for boards and municipalities filling a multi-year baseline; keep the earlier XML files or bills rather than assuming you can re-download them later.

What Share My Data provides and how a third party is authorized

Share My Data is Enbridge's Connect My Data implementation. Its share your energy data with a third party page says the function lets you authorize one or more third parties to obtain your energy data, and that you contact the third party directly to initiate the authorization process. In other words, the flow starts on the third party's side, not inside My Account. Enbridge maintains a listing of third parties that have onboarded with its Green Button solution.

Enbridge's main page describes the authorization steps from the customer's point of view: the third party provides an authorization link; you authenticate with your My Account credentials, or with your account number, postal code and email; you then select the time period (up to 24 months prior), the sharing duration, the data categories and the account or accounts to share. You can authorize multiple third parties, and you can modify or terminate an authorization within My Account.

The third-party FAQ fills in the mechanics. Enbridge says its platform follows the Energy Services Provider Interface (ESPI) version 3.3 standard, uses an OAuth 2.0 authorization flow, and gives a third party access until the expiry date the customer selected, which can be any specific date in the future or indefinite. It also states that customers can modify, add an account to, or terminate their third-party authorizations by logging into My Account. Revoking access

Enbridge's sharing page gives two ways to stop: revoke your consent via the Share My Data section in My Account, or call the customer number listed on that page. As with electricity utilities, the customer holds the control; a third party cannot extend an authorization on its own.

Gas granularity: what the file does and does not contain

Green Button XML is the same standard for gas and electricity. The Green Button Alliance describes the underlying ESPI standard, released by the North American Energy Standards Board in 2011, as a common XML format for energy usage information plus a data exchange protocol, and notes that Download My Data covers electricity, gas or water usage data. The difference is the cadence. Ontario's Green Button page describes the data customers can download as natural gas and hourly electricity usage data; the hourly qualifier applies to electricity, which comes from smart meters. Enbridge's pages describe billing and usage categories and do not describe interval-level gas reads, so plan on gas usage arriving at the cadence of the meter read and bill, in cubic metres, rather than hourly. That is enough for monthly reporting, weather normalization and emissions inventories; it is not enough for hour-by-hour boiler diagnostics, which need a submeter or building automation data. One consequence: gas periods rarely line up with calendar months. When you combine an Enbridge usage record with hourly electricity data for the same site, prorate the gas period across months explicitly rather than assigning the whole read to the month the bill was issued. Portfolio Manager does this if you enter the actual period start and end dates.

Converting cubic metres to energy and emissions

Enbridge bills and reports gas in cubic metres. To compare it with electricity or to report emissions you need two published factors: an energy content and an emission factor. Environment and Climate Change Canada's emission factors and reference values page (version 4.0, September 2026) gives a higher heating value for gaseous natural gas of 38.39 MJ per cubic metre, a 2025 CO2 emission factor for Ontario marketable natural gas of 1,921 grams of CO2 per cubic metre, and CH4 and N2O factors for the residential, commercial and agriculture subsector of 0.037 and 0.035 grams per cubic metre respectively. The factors are published per year and per province, so use the year that matches your data and check the page for updates.

Worked qualitatively: multiply the cubic metres on the bill by the energy content to get megajoules, divide by 1,000 for gigajoules, and multiply cubic metres by the CO2 factor (converting grams to tonnes) for the CO2 line of the inventory. The CH4 and N2O lines are converted to CO2 equivalent using the global warming potentials your reporting framework specifies. Where PDF bills still fit

Green Button covers Enbridge accounts that have My Account access and a customer who can authorize sharing. Several common situations fall outside that:

  • Tenanted sites where the gas account is in someone else's name and the tenant will not set up My Account or authorize sharing.
  • Historical baselines older than the 24 months Enbridge makes available.
  • Accounts with the two municipal gas systems, Kitchener Utilities and Utilities Kingston, which the OEB's natural gas rates page notes are outside its rate regulation, and propane or fuel oil deliveries.
